Third grade is a big transition year. The students enter as dependent learners, and grow to become independent learners and very responsible children. We stress taking responsibility for yourself, be it lunches, homework, and/or classwork.
In Language Arts, our emphasis is no longer "learning to read" but more towards "reading to learn". We stress comprehension, and we begin note taking and outlining skills.
In Math, we learn the multiplication and division facts through 12, along with an introduction to long division. Also covered and/or introduced is area, perimeter, fractions, geometry and measurement.
Social Studies focuses on Native Americans and how they adapt to their different environments. This study culminates with an "at home" research project on a Californian Indian Tribe. We also touch upon how communities change over time.
Science has three main areas of study, Survival of Living Things, The Solar System, and Investigating Matter and Energy.
